Transforming Scaffolding at Prada Fifth Avenue

Situation

During a major renovation of its Fifth Avenue flagship in New York City, Prada faced a familiar but critical challenge: how to maintain a strong brand presence while the building was covered in required construction scaffolding.

Traditionally seen as purely functional and often unattractive, scaffolding can obscure storefront visibility and diminish the customer experience, especially on one of the world’s most high-profile retail corridors. Prada needed a solution that would not only conceal construction, but elevate it into a meaningful extension of its brand identity using impactful large-format banners.

At the same time, the installation had to meet strict structural requirements while performing visually at scale, responding dynamically to light, movement, and changing urban conditions, while also acting as containment and offering protection from debris on the active construction site.

The solution prompted a unique approach to a mesh banner system. A large-scale, multi-layered scaffold wraps would be implemented onto the construction site, blocking the view of the unsightly scaffolding with materials and design fit for the streets of New York. The large format of the print job needed Britten's unique capabilities to achieve the intended design, with double the surface area of the building to cover with bespoke mesh banners.

Solution

In collaboration with design studio 2×4, Prada reimagined scaffolding as a design medium, containing the construction site with an immersive visual banner installation.

Britten supported the execution by fabricating two layered, custom textile mesh banners, each measuring approximately 125 feet by 16 feet. These large-scale scrim layers functioned as advanced scaffold wraps, precisely engineered with offset printing techniques, enabling the creation of a shifting moiré effect across the mesh construction façade.

In addition to fabrication, Britten served as a peer reviewer on the mesh banner system, ensuring the design intent could be successfully executed within structural and real-world installation constraints.

The dual-layer system was critical. Each layer of the scaffold wrap carried a slightly different scale and alignment of pattern, requiring exacting fabrication tolerances to achieve the intended optical illusion. As light, weather, and viewing angles changed, the façade appeared to ripple and move, designing a static construction site barrier as a dynamic brand experience.

Built on standard pipe scaffold systems, the installation seamlessly merged structural necessity with high-design execution, proving that even temporary infrastructure can become a canvas for storytelling at scale.

Impact

The result transformed a regulatory requirement into a landmark visual moment on Fifth Avenue, capturing attention, reinforcing Prada’s design-forward identity, and redefining expectations for construction environments.

Instead of losing visibility during renovation, Prada gained a bold, architectural presence that functioned as both art installation and brand statement, enhanced through integrated large-scale signage. Through this project, Prada also gained attention from the media for this unique application of large-format mesh banners, intensifying its brand presence as a dominant figure in the crowded New York street space. By innovating in an area considered unique compared to traditional advertising, Prada was able to take advantage of otherwise unused creative space and make a statement worthy of media attention and praise. The resulting design project contributed to a broader industry shift, where scaffolding solutions are no longer treated as visual disruption but as opportunities for creative signage and experiential branding.
