Turning the Streets of Boston into a Public Art Exhibit

Situation

As part of an effort to reimagine their streets and pedestrian zones as safer, more engaging, and enjoyable for all, the City of Boston developed Color Flows on Winter Street, the start of a new initiative to use their historic, walkable streets in new ways for the benefit of locals and visitors alike. To kickstart the ongoing long-term investment in this area, the city was tasked with transforming the city district into a colorful community space. Britten was brought on board for this process, creating and installing the graphics that would symbolize this new development of culture and community.

Solution

The goal of the project was visual saturation through art provided by a local artist, the medium was custom decals that made an impact on the community by creating a cohesive look and feel throughout the district. From vacant storefronts to glass façades to blank concrete, Britten’s wall, window, and floor graphics transformed everyday surfaces into bold storytelling platforms that reflected the vibrant community. For the Color Flows street takeover, decals added color, pattern, and narrative where architecture couldn’t. Window graphics turned empty panes into high-impact art and messaging. Colorful floor decals guided foot traffic, created immersive pathways, and added unexpected moments of delight. Wall decals tied everything together to complete the vision, creating an unending canvas to showcase the artist's work to the community.

Impact

The program launched to much praise from the people of Boston, seeing the newfound opportunities to engage with their local community through public art, games, food, and live performances for all ages. The eye-catching event graphics jump-started the grand celebration of the reimagining of one of Boston's busiest pedestrian corridors, enveloping the venue in a radiating energy. City beautification isn’t about permanent architecture, it’s about flexible, dynamic expression that reflects the people within the community and creates a lasting impact. Britten delivered that for the Boston Winter Street District through a full ecosystem of print, fabrication, and installation services.
