J&J MedTech Puts Their Best Face Forward

Situation

The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons is a professional organization that represents over nine thousand surgeons across the nation. They commit themselves to connecting the industry, advancing technology, and encouraging innovation in the medical field. To further these goals, the AAOMS holds an annual meeting that brings thousands of members together for their convention. To showcase their commitment to the organization's cause, J&J MedTech launched a plan to make a HUGE impact with their booth display. After learning about our experience in custom 3D fabrication, J&J MedTech reached out to our team to explore their concept for a massive 3D printed skull. Their idea was to display, in detail, each unique type of facial implant. J&J MedTech's ambitions were to create the skull to be almost as tall as the average adult, with each implant able to be removed to further the tactile and educational aspects of the piece.

Solution

J&J MedTech presented us with the idea and a mock-up of what they envisioned the skull to look like. By combining the technical knowledge of their digital modeling team and the experience of our professional designers and engineers, together we created a highly realistic and anatomically accurate model of a human skull. The model included J&J MedTech's proprietary 3D printed facial implants and plates. The skull would combine our foam sculpting and 3D printing capabilities, highlighting J&J MedTech's 3D printing innovations by crafting the majority of the piece out of printed PLA Filament. During the build, we leveraged our extensive and diverse capabilities to bring it to life in just 1.5 months, well within the eleven-month time frame allotted for the project.

Impact

When the 100-pound 3D printed skull debuted at the AAOMS annual meeting, it was the star of the show and attracted attendees to their booth due to its striking realistic appearance and scale. It brought an educational, interactive experience to the booth that highlighted J&J MedTech's brand and innovative technology. When the event concluded, J&J MedTech was delighted with the positive response that the skull received. "We were the talk of the entire event! Tons of people coming to the booth and taking pics - amazing job by you and the team - Everyone loved it!"
